The view of Barcelona from the hills, a beautiful sight, something that can be captured only by the human eye or a drone, and not a photo camera. In order to capture this image I had to take individual pictures all same level, all during the same weather conditions, and then stitch them together in post processing.
The human eye is capable of capturing so much detail and yet the human brain forgets so much. When we are in distress or stress of any kind our focus narrows our mind almost shuts out any and all useful advice.
Today I was able to see how having a wider view has helped some of my clients. 8 weeks ago we started working with a group whose task was to observe, take note, set goals for change for themselves and family members, try out strategies independently and then grow in confidence insight and ability to co-create. The group had 22 people on the list. Before we even started the sessions 9 people dropped out for a variety of excuses. A further 4 left after just two sessions for other excuses. We were left with 9 individuals who despite their adversities and worries and fears the stayed the course. They endured the pain of realisation, the pain of having to see their own flaws reflected in others and make a conscious effort to give it a go. After 8 weeks of introspection we had a number of breakthroughs, but the biggest observations they made was that any change they wanted from the outside, had to happen first with the change inside. In order for something to be different, they needed to widen their perspective, they needed to be able to give the benefit of the doubt to their loved ones. One person realised that they were the obstacle, because they did everything for the other person, continuously taking over, when their loved one was more than capable of completing things on their own, this person needed to get out of the way to see the other bloom. One person spoke of how their own behaviour was being copied and when that behaviour was shown back to them they found it difficult to deal with. And of course, despite some of the amazing insight we also had group members who continue to be stuck, they are just unable to stitch the story together, they are unable to align all the frames just right, to create a wider image. Their narrow focus continues to impair their view of the world.
Sometimes it is very difficult to make abstraction of what is happening around you, sometimes we are so engrossed in things that getting perspective is hard.
Of course, our own model of the world makes for a very judgemental point of view, and it is only through accepting other people’s model into our own, that growth and change can happen.
How narrow is your lens?
How narrow is your focus?
Does this focus serve you well in life? Do you perhaps need to change your lens?
Time to take out your diary and take some notes when answering the questions.

We are now on day 309 of the 365 days of daily posts. On January 2021 I made a commitment to myself that for a whole calendar year I will post one entry a day, using one of my photos as an inspiration for the post. The daily task was to provide you, my reader a possibility for introspection, and allow a space for reflection. My challenge for that year was to show up daily, find a source for inspiration and provide 15 minute of reflection for myself, creating meaning to my day.
Each day I delved into my archives, chose an image, and made the connection to the self. Each day, I invited you, the reader, to connect with the content and discover something new about your inner world. Sometimes neither one of us wanted to do it, and yet, here we are.
56 days remains of this challenge. 56 days of free daily entries. 56 opportunities to discover something new about the world within and without.
