Broad view

An aerial view of Barcelona at landing. It is a wide view of the city and if you look carefully you can distinguish the architecture that makes this city unique.

This is a broad view of the microcosm that lives within it’s walls, but if you zoom in you can distinguish it’s individual parts. The lighting allows the eye to distinguish what is a building, what is nature, what is man made and what is the Earth in all it’s splendour.

As living beings on this planet, and for efficiency purposes our brain often defaults to a broad view of things, as through generalisations the brain takes the short cut it needs for conservation of energy. I often wonder though, thought these short cuts, what is it that we are missing out? We generalise on many things. We blanket categorise humans, by what se see of them or perceive about them. We see someone in a suit, we think they are doing a specific thing, we see someone with a specific body shape and make an assumption of them. We generalise so we do not have to expend more brain power to identify things, or to not slow down the brain. I guess by generalising “whatever makes the leaves on the bush move=something might eat me” kept our species alive until today. But of course as modern humans, we over generalise to the point that we no longer pay attention to the individual parts, and in stead of being able to recognise what is happening to us, we blanket accept a broad view, that may not be in our best interest.

But I guess having too narrow a focus may also be bad, because by paying to much attention to detail can also be harmful to us, so what is the answer? Balance.

Are you able to focus the mind, so it does not have too broad a view, but be discerning enough to not be too narrow viewed either? Are you able to find the detail but not be bogged down by the pixels? Are you able to see, without clouding the jusdgement?
