Frozen in time

Today I am taking you back to winter, to get you to consider the concept of being frozen in time.

Technically, a photograph is already an event frozen in time, but I thought I add a bit of cold into the mix, especially for those who may be enjoying a hot summer’s day.

At the time I am writing this it is summer, and in some parts of the world is extremely hot, perhaps unusually hot, so perhaps a bit of ice may cool the spirits down.

Today I was doing some training on somatic symptoms and trauma, and the speaker was explaining how a traumatic moment gets locked into our body as if frozen in time. These muscle memories can then cause issues later on in time, without us even being aware of it. Often the clients I work with seem to be indeed frozen in time. I worked with a person once who, whenever they spoke, they were looking forward, body stiff, monotone voice, no facial movement – as if they were a statue. Interestingly, they were talking about a very emotive memory and yet their whole body was rigid, immovable. Interestingly also, they used to be very animated about trivial things, but the moment we touched on a topic that linked back to earlier points in their life, the same stone-faced look would greet me.

This idea of our body being stuck in a moment in time, and then carrying it around us, just to be stuck once again back in that moment can be debilitating for some.

I wonder how many of you who read these entries have found yourself experiencing muscle pains with no apparent source to the pain?

I wonder how many of you get flooded with emotions quickly, as if out of the blue, and you do not know why?

I wonder how many of you are raging in anger, either outward or inward, and once again, you have no apparent reason?

I was with a person a while back and they were showing me a video on their phone, and a text message came through; this person started swearing then picked up their phone and started punching it; as if wanting to smash the screen, and all because someone sent a text. This person within seconds of wanting to smash their phone, put the phone on the table and carried on playing the video, as if nothing happened. This person is clearly stuck in an emotional cycle that they cannot control, and instead of addressing the underlying issue, they react as if the problem of days past is still vivid today. I am wondering if this individual is aware that they are raging inside to this degree? I am wondering if they are aware of what has happened to them in the past, that may be contributing to their rage? And then of course the million-dollar question is, would they accept the help? What do you think?!

Have you ever felt such debilitating rage that you cannot control yourself?

Did you actually explore what has happened leading up to it?

Have you ever considered what your thoughts were?

Have you ever considered what were the feelings that came up?

Have you ever wondered if you gained anything from this rage?

Have you considered what you have lost as a result of the rage?

And then the last question would be, what change would need to happen in your thoughts or feelings? Or even in your actions, in order to break the cycle?

An event takes place and then an outcome is observed – the universal law of cause and effect. And in between the even and the outcome thoughts and feelings emerge, they emerge seamlessly and unconsciously, and yet based on what we felt and what we thought the outcome is determined. And of course, when we are in that spiral it is difficult to realise what we gain or lose as a result of our actions.

Emotions and experiences, get stored in the body from a very early stage in our development; in utero, when we are but a bunch of cells coming together to form a human.

We are truly a human in training, our nervous system is trained to respond or react to how our mother reacts and responds to the stressors around her and then when we emerge fully formed; the world becomes either our friend or our enemy.

Do you remember how your emotions and reactions to the world came to be?

Is your body frozen in time?

Are you ready to shake it our, and get that body moving energy again?

Perhaps is time you looked at your own vicious cycle of anger?

Perhaps you deserve you lead a move balanced life, perhaps it is time…. perhaps you came here at the right time for the right reason.
