A dog standing on a rooftop made of metal sheets and wooden planks, surrounded by a partially visible building and branches in black and white.

Animals, such a good reference point. As you can see this is an image, I took in 2011 and manipulated digitally after.

Another dog in a defensive stance. I saw this dog on the roof of a garage in Europe, this shows his determination to defend his territory from a height. And yes this fella was up on a roof and yet, me the passer by at ground level was a threat. The perception he had was I was in his territory, my perception I was in the middle of the road taking a photo of it. Interesting right?

As humans we consider ourselves superior to other creatures on the planet because we have a sophisticated brain able to cognise what is around us. But are we any different when it comes to our identity, our ego, our selves, our things we deem property, our humans, our family, our values – are we any different from any other creature on the planet and do we give up our defensive stance? Or do we react the very same way? Bark or defend the “territory” from intruders?!

Who are your “intruders”?

What is your territory?

How wide is your territory?

Who is the “enemy”?

Who is your Sabretooth tiger?

What do you consider “property” that is worth defending?

Do you have the high ground?

Do you defend from low ground?

Do you defend at all, that which needs defending?

Is the fight worth it?

What are the outcomes of your fight?

Do you apply any learning/knowledge from that encounter so that you are either better prepared or more level in your next interaction?

Do you ever project a past event on a present moment and yet they are not the same?

Can you tell the difference? Is your bark louder than your bite?

Do you actually have an open mind to accept other perspectives, so that perhaps no defence is needed?

What does defence mean, after all?
