Today I propose an “inspirational quote ” that no doubt I photographed with my mobile in one of the locations I work in. I found this poster no doubt interesting as it highlights the very human element of our psyche. We all want to be the best of the best, the most talented, the most recognised, the wealthiest, the skinniest, the most loved, the owner of the biggest house, the owner of the best car, the ….. You get my drift. What is also a very human characteristic is that often we put off the work we need to do in order to get what it is we desire because it takes too long a time, or it takes too much effort or it takes co-operating with someone; or it is this or that, or unicorns don’t exist anymore. That’s true we come up with the most ridiculous of excuses for not completing that which w need to do.
Procrastination is a good thing, when we are over indulging in things, like having too much chocolate, or too many slices of pizza, or when we ordered that bucket of chicken, or gambled away your rent money, or bought that super expensive pair of shoes, you know what I am talking about here. What if when those excessive thoughts come up, maybe we procrastinate a bit. You know we tell the mind and the body to chill out, take it’s time maybe delay it by 5 minutes, half an hour; close the browser down go do something else for a while, maybe re-open that tab tomorrow. In such moments to procrastinate is to do yourself a favour.
Other times delaying is the opposite of being helpful, and I know many of us have the inbuilt belief that we are not good enough because of the stories we were told or continue to tell ourselves. As I mentioned in my previous entries, we are survivors! If you read this, it means you have won. The very first battle you won was being born, then you survived those early years, and you continued surviving ever since. Now what does survival got anything to do with the picture? Well, if you have not put the work in, then you would not be reading these words. So if you are a survivor, and therefore you have the tools within, then what stops you growing beyond survival, and actually growing further in abundance?
In my earlier entries I mentioned anxiety and sadness as magnificent friends who join the party of procrastination, and in fact relate back to the image we started off with. If you are too worried about taking charge of your own life, you end up being sad about your own difficulties, then you get angry with yourself because of it, just to realise that you could have done it all along, but you gave up because you were worried, and back on the hamster wheel we go. Do you like being on that hamster wheel? Are you happy chasing your own tail all the time? Running up that wheel just to find yourself on the bottom again? In Greek mythology there is a story of the character keep pushing the stone up the hill that kept tumbling back, and back the character pushed the stone and back it fell, and basically this was their living hell. So then? Are you not tired of your own “hell on earth”.
When did you last used anger as a fuel for motivation? When did you last use that intense energy surging through your body, to read an extra chapter, to get up and go for a walk or a run, or wash up those dishes, or clean that house, or emancipate your own mind and put it to work in a helpful way? Emotions are the power that moves, so why not use the emotions you have inside to imbold you to action?
In order to transcend your own lived experience, you have to recognise the tools you have learnt along the way that were helpful; and recognise those tools that were not in your best interest, and of course use more of the tools that help and discard those that are over used, antiquated, rusty and unhelpful.
So take a piece of paper and either write down/draw or take clay and mould something that express the “tools that helped” and “tools that hindered”. Yes I use the word “tools” to refer to events, to refer to people, to refer to learning, or places, basically anything and everything is a tool to be used. And when you have that list of what helps and what hinders, you will need what you have to do with them, and how to move forward.
Will you continue to be upset? Or will you take 100% responsibility for creating a different reality. When I say 100% responsibility, I mean be able to respond and take charge of 100% of everything that is happening around you. And when you start acting as if you are 100% responsible for your own outcomes, then you have taken your power back. You can either be at the helm of your own sheep steering it where you want it to go, or you can be at the mercy of the wind. The choice is entirely yours.
Are you still upset?
