I invite you to journey with me to Sintra in Portugal, on a meandering road up the mountain. When I first visited the area the train dropped me off at the bottom of the mountain, I looked up, and there the castle was. Of course like the foolish European that I was I thought why not just walk up and save a few Euros. Little did I know that the road was meandering up the mountain, with switchbacks and steep inclines and more switchbacks. After two hours of uphill climb I decided that enough is enough, and I took the bus the remainder of the way. This image perhaps was from the viewpoint of the bus stop, watching a lonely man walking down the road. For me, this was a road less travelled. It was an unknown road, a climb to something that I wanted to visit (a goal) but the image I had in my head, the imagined possibility most certainly did not match the reality.
How often did you launch head first into something without taking into account your options? How many times do you start something with a proper plan?
Do you always achieve what you imagine?
Are your goals in line with your abilities and your plans?
Does your imagination take into account reality or does it just make it up in the hopes of all working itself out?
Perhaps one day you will visit Sintra Castle, perhaps you too will look up from the bottom, imagining that “surely this is straight forward”, my advice is, invest in the bus ticket, you will not be sorry.
Time to take out your diary and take some notes when answering the questions.
