A soldier in ceremonial uniform leading a black horse alongside another horse, both adorned with traditional regalia, in front of a historical building.

Two royal guards, taking their horse in, after they finished their posting – London 2015.

The title in its full is “you can lead the horse to water but you cannot make it drink”. As always when I look for an image for these posts the title that pops into my head at the right moment determines the subject of the post. So of course, the horse, and it being led, lent itself to the best title (now that is a tongue twister 😊 ).

But what does the title mean? Well, my dear reader, people can suggest things, they can advise things, but ultimately the choice is yours what you do with the information, how you apply it, how you make it your own.

Today I was speaking to a client and the theme for the day was “it is your choice”. We have free will in whatever it is we do. We can choose to be victims of a situation or choose to take charge of our lives. We can choose to blame something or someone on the outside or we can choose to take the power back. We can make the choice to wallow in our own sorrow or flip it on its head and decide to be serene about the world.

Everything is a question of choice and perspective. Yes, true there are times in our lives when we have no power to take control. And I guess those moments are when we are in survival mode. And we need to conserve energy just to make it through the day. But when the situation is over, we can take back the energy and decide the outcome we wish for ourselves.

Even in this picture, the horse had a choice, to follow its master or take a different path and fight the master. But, I guess after a long shift standing outside, perhaps it preferred the cool stables, something to eat and drink, and not have to put up with the tourists and the cars.

And of course, there are those humans who have been shown the path to take so many times but they are not ready to step on it or even try the path for various fears. And often it is the fear that keeps you in one spot and makes you feel like you cannot do anything about your situation. So then, the choice is yours, you can either have a drink of water or come up with excuses for not drinking. The alternative is, you can try have a sip, and have trust in the water that it will be clean enough and you satiate your thirst.

Clearly there are many ways to achieve something, and many excuses not to try something. Ultimately what you do is up to you, and no one can fault you for it.

So, my question to you is, if you were shown the water would you take a sip?
