The image for today comes from Cannes in France circa 2009. Perhaps as you look at the image you may find it hard to figure out what it is, so will let you guess what it represents.
When I was choosing the image to day it remind me how often as humans we get ourselves into binging situations that we find it hard to get out of. Sometimes we make promises that we don’t keep, sometimes we say things we do not mean, end relationships out of fear or maybe by hoping that the next relationship will be better, we may give up on friends or family because it is just too hard to make things work. It also reminded me how often human beings forget who they are and instead they create these elaborate personas in the hopes that that person will be liked more than if they were showing their true selves.
The image in a way also represented something I spoke about earlier in the year, the accumulation of labels that others have given to us. And of course sometimes because of all the labels we were given we start believing that it was indeed us.
Often when I speak to my clients I hear them tell me how their inner voice is not kind to them. That in their own heads they have a go at themselves, call themselves stupid, and many other unkind words, and no amount of extremal validation can change their minds. Effectively they are bound to those labels others have given them both on the outside and on the inside, and they find it difficult to strip all of it away for fear of not knowing who they are in the end.
So if we were to strip everything away in the photo, what do you think it will represent? Did you guess it was a film projector?
If you were to strip away all the labels people have given about you, or to describe you; who would you be?
