A lighthouse emitting a bright light against a dark, cloudy sky, with illuminated beams radiating from the top.

The lighthouse in Porto, doing its job, lighting the way for the sailors for decades. When I took this picture in 2012, it continued with its mission, being a beacon of hope to all the vessels passing on the way to port.

Sometimes, as human beings, we also need beacons of hope. For us, such a beacon can be a person, can be a thought, can be a son, can be a book Sometimes the “light” comes from unexpected places and faces. Sometimes all it takes is a smile, a word, a look – for us to feel at ease, at home, safe.

For many people across the globe, hope comes from a specific date in their calendar, or from a building they enter they use their faith to offer the hope they need to get through another day, another trial, another tribulation. Somehow hope is the last one to die, no matter what harsh conditions come about, hope is the last to go.

As we are approaching the end of a calendar year, let us reflect back to what has been your beacon this year?

Did you use a human being as an anchor? Did you use a thought pattern to link you to reality?

Did you use an object to ground you?

What was it that kept you afloat and away from any peril on your sea of life?
