Drifting

I took this picture at the M. world with the cars drifting on the artificial surface demonstrating the grip and reliability of the car. I can tell you from personal experience this car was super fast; super reliable and most certainly created an adrenaline rush, but I digress. This car was indeed drifting as if on ice, with the driver maintaining this drift for at least 2 laps.

But why am i telling you the story of the image you ask? I am telling you so that you understand that in order to safely drift you need control, you need grip; you need the right machine, the right driver – so that when the car skids you have the certainty that you will come out of the drift safely and sound.  I was in the car as it drifted around the circuit and though I was absolutely petrified there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that when we were out of the drift we will be fine. I was holding on for sure, but you know with all the force of the drift on your body at high speed, you have to anchor yourself.

So then, when you read “drifting” what image came to mind?

When you instinctively tried to put a meaning to the word, did you consider all the elements that needed to converges in one instant in order for it to work safely?

Have you considered that perhaps drifting may also mean that you do move around the world but yet you are firmly anchored in yourself?

Have you considered that in order to safely emerge from the drift you may need control, you may need gip, you may need the right components to all work together to emerge victorious?

Have you ever felt in a state of drift? And perhaps you did not know when the drift will end?

When I was drifting in the car, I had no idea when the car will do it’s full spin around the circuit, I had no control over anything, I was the passenger. My driver had a “performance” to do, he was receiving instruction by the “choreographer” on the side line; to make sure that all cars moved together across the field, that none crashed or got in the way of the other. There was a script that my driver knew but I did not, and yet I trusted that once the drift was over the whole world will return to normal, but my body will be forever altered. Why altered? Well, even now as I look at the image my amygdala is triggered, and all my other systems become to fire in it’s eternal cycle of flight or fight, and yet I know that I am not in that car, I am at a keyboard telling you all the story of my drift.

Have you ever felt that your whole system is highjacked, that though you are sitting comfortably where ever it is you are reading this blog from, your whole body has an emotional experience; that then get transformed into a physical sensation; that then triggers a response from you to the world? In those moments you are drifting, you are drifting into your emotional world that is highjacked by a system that you have no control over; it is a biological mechanism that kept our species alive from day dot.  In those emotional drifts, do you feel secure? Do you feel safe in your body and mind? Do you feel that you can leave the vortex without damage? Do you feel you have control over the drift? Or do you let yourself taken on a ride with no knowledge of how it ends? Are you in the driving seat, knowing when to pull the breaks, when to turn the wheel, when to slow the system down, when to right yourself and come out onto the home straight? Are you the choreographer of your own script? Are you the architect of your own experience?

Are you in control of your drift?
