Hang on

Back to the world of insects. I was enjoying a working from “home” day when I saw this moth on the patio doors. Needless to say I go my camera out and snapped a pic. I find it amusing to see the little beady eyes and the underbelly of this creature. Perhaps someone with a bug phobia is not amusing, but for this humble photographer, it tickled their funny bone. But did you notice what I just said, the moth was hanging out on the window. Imagine how perfect a creature it is that with scrawny little legs it manages to hang onto the glass and when needed can just fly away no questions asked.

When I see such feats from creatures that are so much lighter than us, much simpler than us, I realise how magnificent nature is. Would you be able to hand onto the window as you are? Would you be able to just lift off, every so lightly and fly away?

Now let me add a bit more to the story. As a sophisticated human I felt the need to try and photograph it from outside the window, what do you think happened?!You are right, it flew away. Now, consider this – big human, heavy human, much larger human – small moth, light moth, who do you think is scarier? So now, those of you with a phobia of all things bugs, where do you think your aversion or fear comes from? Are you able to figure it out? I guess in my case the moth was rightfully afraid of me, because compared to it, I am much larger and can be seen as a predator. The moth reacted instinctively, in order to preserve its life. It hang on for as long as it could, but when I came about, it flew off to live another day. The moth was hanging on for a reason, perhaps it was taking a break, perhaps it was waiting for a mate, perhaps it was contemplating where to next for food. When we hang on to things as humans, what is the purpose of our hanging on? What is the purpose of clinging? What is it so difficult about letting go? What makes it so hard that we can not be as light as a moth?

Nature once again teaches us a valuable lesson. Sometimes is worth taking a breather, sometimes if ok to hang on; and sometimes it is also ok to run for your life, the importance here is to discern the action behind the thought.
