Silhouette of a person standing by a coastal path at sunset, with boats on the water and a partly cloudy sky.

We are continuing our residency in 2012 – we continue in our journey through Porto. Clearly this man standing by the road sign as the sun was setting over the water was fascinating, and I believe I snapped it as we were driving out towards the ocean front.

Sometimes it take just a few seconds for a sign, a snippet of information to enter our consciousness, and we are hooked. We believe that the grandest ideas come about after hours and hours of thinking, and yet, the most brilliant thoughts can happen in an instant. I guess in our busy lives, we sometimes forget how important is to pay attention. Sometimes the fleeting look, the micro expression, can tell a thousand words.

A few weeks back I was speaking to a client in their home and their partner came in, and before any words were spoken, a single look told a thousand words. One fleeting look told me all I needed to know about that relationship. That fleeting look expressed so many emotions that was difficult to ignore, and yet the partner intentionally dismissed it.

Sometimes the smallest of smiles, or the harshest of looks can tell the story about another human. Sometimes a hunch, a gut feeling, a fleeting image in the mind, can give us a clue o what comes next and yet we are told so many times by people around us to ignore that inner senses.

The person in the image is looking up at the sign, perhaps only in a daze as he was waiting for their lift. For me it took me seconds to lift the camera and capture the silhouette against the backdrop of the sky. A second more and the image would have been gone. Such images remind me how important is to walk around the world with open eyes and mind, for it take but a second, for the whole story to change.
