Sometimes we are provided with opportunities in the world, as if on a platter. This bird had a cherry in front of it and when I captured the image it looked into the camera as if asking permission to tuck into the fruit.
When we are provided with opportunities as human beings often we are too afraid to take them on, as if questioning the validity of the offer or whether it will back fire. It is interesting how as adults we become so sceptical about the world around us that we question everything. There is a saying “do not look a gift horse in the mouth” and yet no matter how many times we are given a gift, whatever it is we tend to question it.
Sometimes the gift could be a smile from a stranger, it could be someone giving us the change we need to get on the bus, sometimes it is a discount offer, or even a free ticket.
I remember when I was in Vienna a few years back and we had a visitor ticket to an attraction and we kind of already did it, therefore we no longer needed it, we saw this guy really craning his neck trying to look in but clearly not willing to pay the price. We went up to him to give him the ticket that we weren’t going to use, and when we offered it to him he was looking at us as if we had two heads. He was questioning why we wee giving it to him, he was not sure what our angle was, he was unsure what he has done to deserve it. Of course we just passed it on to him and walked away. Leaving him wondering what has just happened to him.
Last Christmas I had an extra shopping voucher that would have provided much needed food for a needing family. I saw the street pastors by chance on the street, and I stopped them and passed on the voucher. These Christian street pastors spend several minutes questioning me why I was giving the voucher away, what was it all about; and why was I giving it to them specifically. They too could not believe that someone randomly would stop them offer them something to pass on to someone else who may need it more than me.
It is interesting isn’t it that we find it difficult to accept something nice without questioning it? It is as if we need permission to enjoy something?! It is as if we have to look fate in the eyes and say “may I” “is this for real”?!
Are you able to accept something without questioning it?
