In 2007 I was part of a graffiti project – the cans were the tools of the trade. As an art form it has earned a negative connotation, and yet it can be the medium for extraordinary works of art in the greatest art exhibition space – the great outdoors.
I am wondering what picture would you come up if you were to paint your life in just one painting? The artist who ran the project asked us to do this very thing – create a tag for ourselves and incorporate something that defines us in the final piece.
When have you created an image that represented you? Do you have enough expressive and creative force to sum it up in one succinct imagery? Would you want to condense your self, to just one image? Would you want to use specific words to describe your magnificence? So if you might find it difficult to define yourself in just one small image, then what makes you identify yourself with one way of being described? Why would you take things personally when someone makes a comment about you? If you feel that one image could not capture the wholeness of who you are, have been and have the potential to be, then why when others speak of you, you need to defend yourself? What is it about what people say that makes you get all defensive?
It is interesting that when we start being precise about describing ourselves, something within us almost screams at us to defend it.
Have you tried to just flow with the world, and be non comital about how old you are, about what you like and dislike; have you tried to be non-comital about what you will be doing in the next day. Have you noticed how your experience of the world changes?
Paint a non-comital picture….is that achievable?
