Close-up of a wallaby lying down with its face turned slightly to the side.

Today a wallaby is getting us on the right track to explore the inner world. I photographed this beautiful soul in 2009, so by now is an old little soul, hopefully.

As I was looking through my photo collection this portrait caught my eye, to me it exemplified the word “thoughts”. Sometimes we forget how we appear to others. We forget that our physiognomy changes based on the inner workings of our mind, and emotions. Very few human beings are able to hide what they are feeling and/or thinking from someone with a trained eye. Even the smallest of thought can be seen through micro expressions that we unconsciously plaster all over the face.

It made me think of micro expressions because today I was not feeling really awake and when I had a virtual call with a colleague, they too looked forlorn and lost in thought. And perhaps as we looked at each other through a video cam perhaps we thought of each other how tired and fed up the other looked.

Have you ever tried to figure out how you look to other people, when you are deep in thought? Have you ever considered what you are letting slip through your micro expressions? Have you ever found that some people can just tell you are having an off day? Can you actually camouflage all of your thoughts and feelings away from people?

Much of how we are and what we do are behaviours we have done thousands of times; thoughts and emotions we had just as many times. And of course, many of our thoughts and feelings are not new, because we have them every single day. We may not have the same thoughts in the same order, but pretty much, same thoughts and feelings are happening day in and day out. Feeling tired is just about to what degree you are tired, but your face, your body will show tiredness regardless of how much you try to hide it. Your body will have an expression of what you feel on the inside through the outward appearance. Being sad again is just a variation and to what degree you are sad, and again your body will have an expression of that through how it carries itself.

But then again, without you admitting it to yourself, how you feel and to what degree you feel that emotion, nobody will know exactly what you are feeling. And perhaps you, yourself, do not even know what and how you feel, the body just obeys the unconscious command. That unconscious command that is now a habit, because it has been repeated time and time again.

Perhaps the wallaby is just and example of how you look when you have thoughts, perhaps you are less expressive. But yeah, thoughts…are not as hidden as you think they are.  And perhaps what I think is a wallaby is actually a kangaroo, or perhaps this souls is just a soul. And perhaps you are also more than just a body, you are an eternal soul expressing itself through your current corporeal self. Isn’t it time you got in touch mind, body and soul?
