A view down a cobbled staircase surrounded by trees and autumn foliage, leading to a foggy street with buildings in the background.

Goteborg, Sweden 2018, a cold October afternoon, sometime before I took this picture, the snow also made a guest appearance. I loved the view from the top of the steps as we were looking back into the town. To me this looks like a city that to some degree appears abandoned, and one is expecting for some weird phenomena to also join you for a stroll. A few minutes later there were other people walking by, but for just one instant the place looked eerily empty.

To me this image also evokes memories of dreams, as if you are looking hauntingly across from yourself awaiting the end of the dream to come about, and almost fly away to a different place and time entirely.

Today this image captured me, as I finished some training that focused on trauma, and to some degree this empty scene can represent someone’s inner state. Perhaps this person has had so man adverse events in their lives that they have erased all other humans from their existence, and they may well be looking at a massive void within. These stairs could also be a symbol of the arduous journey of many of us, who perhaps had to deal with tough events in our lives. Let’s face it, not one human being on this planet has gone through life without life happening to them. I dare anyone to tell me they did not have one even in their lives that imprinted so strongly on their mind, that they do not have some form of adverse reaction to the memory. Of course, many of us have some resilience to us, and therefore we can bounce back from things, but some people in the world have experienced so much in their life time, that things feel empty and haunted. For most people, they can go home and be in the arms of a loved one, for some however that is not something they can do, and then when they look back on life it feels like being at the top of those steps looking back, and find no one there.

Today I invite you to reflect on who are your people you go to in the world?

Where is home for you in this world? What would actually feel like being at home?

Is the house you live in, feel like home?

What adaptations did you have to make to feel like the space you are in, feels like home?

What adaptations did you have to make for yourself, to feel like you are home in the world?

What are the things that you would take with you no matter where you went to live, to make it your new home?

What would you leave behind, so that you do not carry it over to your next location?
