The right ticket

The tickets to a concert in the form of a bracelet, something that reminds us of the good times I guess.

Today when I was once again looking for the right image, this jumped in, well actually a similar image but this has more of an impact.

Having the right ticket – an apt kind of picture for the world around, and perhaps for the human experience. Somehow as humans we always feel like we are left out of something. Like what we have is not enough or perhaps that we have been dealt the wrong cards. The interesting part is that when we are very young, we somehow seem to feel like the whole word is our oyster and we can do anything and everything in the world, no limits, but then as we age, and as we grow up, more and more inhibitions are put upon us, so that by the time we are adults we no longer have a sense of wonder. Between birth and adulthood somehow, we loose our shine, our ability to dream, our sense of adventure. Perhaps is not true to all humans, but most seem to lose their lustre the moment they eave childhood behind.

Today I was talking to a client who is not yet 18 (well they are a few months away) and they were telling me how before they even reached adulthood they are tired. They were telling me how everything is “loooong” (that’s basically saying it takes too much effort to do). They were talking how everything is taking too long and they felt under pressure. Whilst they were trying to problem solve their current difficulty this young person looked deflated and down right miserable, so I tried to get them that opportunity to dream again. And slowly the young person started to tell me their dream explaining in detail what their ideal world would look like, with the rules and everything and you could see how they were beaming with joy and wonder. And just like that the light went out, when they thought that the story they were saying was foolish and childish and it was just something they imagined when they were younger, and with that the whole joy drained from their face. Within a second they felt they no longer belonged, they no longer had the ticket to ride, they no longer found a place for themselves in the world. This change happened in an instant without me saying a word, something just happening in their mind and the whole sense of adventure was wiped out.

When did you loose your sense of wonder? When did you start thinking you don’t have the right ticket? When did you lost your sense of joy in the beauty of the world?

And if you have not lost your sense of wonder, what help you keep it? And if you lost it for a while, but now you have found it again, how did that come about? How did you manage to keep you joy despite the journey into adulthood?
