Through the keyhole

I took this picture when I was working with a client who experienced high anxiety. We used the medium of photography to expand their experience in the world.

I call it the keyhole, due to the framing I managed to use here, going through a gate’s gratings to take the image.

When I saw this picture, I knew I need to share it.

Yesterday we spoke of time, and whether it is important to us.

Today I am talking about that narrow field we call our life and our existence. A spec of existence in the expanse of the universe.

We are just a tiny atom, or even smaller than an atom in the expanse of the universe. And just like my camera looked through something to take the image, so do we, look through the portal of time to experience a very narrow bandwidth of the world.

7 billion + humans on this planet and each human has a very narrow view of the world. It is narrow, because often, said human, clings to its own perspective (spoke of it a few days ago) and is not willing to budge from its position for fear of losing themselves.

Doesn’t it feel like you are looking through a key hole at your life?

You do the same thing every day You have the same things every day. You read the same newspapers every day. You have the same playlist playing over and over again. You have a favourite football team you watch all the time. You have certain foods you keep ordering from the take away.

Now tell me how varied is your life?

You wake up at the same time. You shuffle to the kettle and boil the water for a tea or a coffee and you can’t start the day until you have done your routine. “But I don’t have a routine in the morning!” I hear some of you scream at my statement. No?! Well, what is it you do first thing in the morning, then the second thing, then the third thing? If it happens multiple times in a week, it’s routine. Do you get up from a particular side of the bed every morning? What is the first thing you look at in the morning? And so on. The likelihood is that is the mobile phone waking you up in the morning with the alarm, and so the day begins, all the social media pings that came through during the night starts your day.

But of course, I generalise.

I wonder, how much of what you do daily feels like routine, feels like an obligation, a task that you have to check off?

Does your life not feel like you are watching through the key hole?

Isn’t it time you switched it up and started living?

How much of what you think, feel, experience, live is in accordance of who you truly are, and not some expectation of someone?

Time to open the door, and allow life to flood in, time to live.
